The A-10A Thunderbolt II is an attacker utilized by numerous countries and organizations featured in Ace Combat. It is typically used to make devastating low-altitude, low-speed attacks on enemy formations.
Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown replaced the A-10A with the upgraded A-10C Thunderbolt II.
History[]
Strangereal[]
Many major militaries in Strangereal utilize the A-10A. It has been featured in numerous conflicts, including the Belkan War, Usean coup d'état, Continental War, and Circum-Pacific War.
The Belkan Air Force made use of the A-10 as a ground attack aircraft.[1] Johann Braess, callsign STORCH, was a Belkan A-10 ace who was part of the defense of Route 171 early in the war, he was shot down by the Galm Team during Operation Roselein, however.[2] Galm later encountered another Belkan A-10 ace during the Operation Varsity over Solis Ortus, this was Albrecht Klos, callsign FISCHER, similar to Braess, however, he was also shot down by Galm.[3]
Belka also deployed an A-10 to Directus during Operation Constantine to serve as a tank-buster against Allied tank units entering the city, the ground units made an air support request to the Galm Team, however, and the A-10 was shot down.[4] Later in the war, Galm Team encountered a third Belkan A-10 ace, in the skies above Hoffnung, during Operation Cannibal. This ace was Ludwig Richter, callsign PELIKAN, he was shot down whilst attempting to defend the city from the advancing Allied ground forces.[5]
During the Continental War, an Erusean A-10 ace with the callsign of "CIFFREO" was present near Rigley Air Base during Operation Harvest. He was engaged by Mobius 1 whilst the latter was destroying the Tu-95 Bears and airbase facilities, and was shot down.[6]
Later on, during Operation Bunker Shot a squadron of highly maneuverable A-10s were deployed by Erusea against the Independent State Allied Forces landing on Crowne Beach, in the center of the operation area. The A-10s targeted ISAF ground troops landing on the beach as Erusean ground resistance was faltering from ISAF air attacks, but Mobius One and other ISAF pilots shot them down, ending the operation in victory for ISAF.[7]
During the Circum-Pacific War, Yuktobanian Air Force sent several Thunderbolt IIs to repel Osean amphibious forces invading Bastok Peninsula.[8]
During the Emmeria-Estovakia War both the Republic of Emmeria Air Force and the Estovakian Air Force made use of the A-10A. Most notably, the aircraft was used by Emmeria's Stingray Squadron[9] and Estovakian ace Adalbert Radic, callsign "Rytsary", during the battle of the Moloch Desert.[10] The Estovakian Air Force also used A-10As during their partisan sweep operation.[11]
Joint Assault universe[]
During the Valahia Crisis, Varcolac Squadron member Daniel Oruma flew a personalized A-10A during the squadron's second[12] and third encounter against the Antares Squadron.[13] Oruma was shot down in his A-10A during the latter encounter, and replaced his downed aircraft with a GAF-1 Varcolac.
Infinity universe[]
The A-10A saw limited use in the USEA Federation. A few units were dispatched to protect the Avalon Dam facility. Another squadron were used during Operation Bunker Shot to defend against the advancing UN forces, but all were shot down.
As for the UNF, the Thunderbolt were widely used by mercenaries, proving to be an excellent choice for air-to-ground attack.
Game Analysis[]
Ace Combat Infinity[]
- "A heavily armed attacker that offers close range ground support using overwhelming firepower and endurance. Featuring a broad selection of weapons, including 30mm machine guns, bombs and rockets, offering excellent air-to-ground attack capabilities. Highly stable at low speeds, it specializes at extended and precise ground clearing in a single attack approach. Known as the "Thunderbolt II", it is characterized by a straight wing that is strong at low speeds, and its high placed engine and reinforced armor protects it against counter attacks from the ground."

- "An attack aircraft with heavy armor that provides close-range ground support with overwhelming firepower and durability. Well supplied with weaponry such as a 30 mm heavy machine gun and multiple lock-on ground missiles, it possesses outstanding ground attack capabilities. Very stable at slow speeds, its specialty is precision ground strafing for a long period of time during an attack approach. Known as the "Thunderbolt," its notable features include unswept wings that generate plenty of lift at slow speeds, the high placement of its engine which makes it resistant to counterattacks from the ground, and its reinforced armor plating."

- "The A-10A features a straight-wing design for additional strength at low speeds, high mounted engines to avoid enemy ground fire, and heavy armor plating. It is feared by enemy ground troops as the “Tank Killer” for its ability to continue the assault despite taking considerable damage. It is an extremely durable and stable aircraft with superior maneuvering capabilities. Trivia[]
- In real life, the A-10A is unable to exceed a speed of 520 mph (840 km/h) in level flight. In Ace Combat, it is depicted as being able to go to speeds much higher than that, especially with part modifications.
- In Ace Combat: Assault Horizon, the design of the Thunderbolt II allows it to maintain pitch control while stalling, an ability shared with the F-35B Lightning II and the AV-8B Harrier II plus.
