The ADA-01 ADLER is a ground attack variant of the ADF-01 FALKEN. The airframe of the plane had features such as variable geometry wings with "jagged" tips, a Sukhoi-style boom located between the engines and horizontal stabilizer surfaces and a body longer than that of the ADF-01, designed to maximize visibility for the pilot. In general, the ADLER and the FALKEN would have been very similar in design, as the ADA-01 would have shared about 42% of its parts with the original fighter.

A rare screenshot of the ADLER

The ADA-01 ADLER was a proposed original aircraft by Project Aces, which was planned to appear in Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War, and later in Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War, failing to appear in both games.

The third aircraft in the Gründer Industries "ADF" series, it would have been intended to be the line's first aircraft centered primarily on ground attack duties.

History

The ADA-01 was first formulated during the development of Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War. A ground attack version of the ADF-01 FALKEN, it would have been unlocked by destroying a large number of enemy targets and filling the Kill Rate Gauge of the FALKEN, and then purchasing it from the Hangar shop once available. The secondary weapon of the ADLER, the "SDBM" (see below), would have boasted power unachievable by any other SP weapon. The power of the SDBM, however, led to its removal from the retail version.[1]

Two years later, the aircraft's introduction was planned for Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War. The plan to introduce it, however, was brought up towards the release deadline, and the development of the ADLER would have posponed the game's launch. As a result, the ADFX-01/02 Morgan was created in its stead, while the concept of the SDBM was revived in the shape of the Multi-Purpose Burst Missile (MPBM).[1]

In late 2011, the artbook "ACES AT WAR: A History" was released to celebrate the release of Ace Combat: Assault Horizon, in which the ADLER was revealed for the first time in history to the public.

Design

The ADA-01 ADLER is a ground attack variant of the ADF-01 FALKEN. The airframe of the plane had features such as variable geometry wings with "jagged" tips, a Sukhoi-style boom located between the engines and horizontal stabilizer surfaces and a body longer than that of the ADF-01, designed to maximize visibility for the pilot. In general, the ADLER and the FALKEN would have been very similar in design, as the ADA-01 would have shared about 42% of its parts with the original fighter.

The aircraft's main weapons would have been four 30mm cannons mounted in the wings, and the powerful SDBM missile. As a ground attack plane, it would have carried out its missions with the assistance of FALKEN escorts.

SDBM

The ADLER's core special weapon was the "SDBM", a powerful missile with an amount of power beyond that achieved by any aircraft-launched weapon in the Strangereal world. The definition of the acronym is unspecified, though the "BM" in its name would imply that it is a type of burst missile.

The SDBM uses a warhead which makes use of polynitrogen, a highly unstable chemical compound. The chemical is contained at cryogenic temperatures within two containers at the sides of the missile, which are sealed by protective surfaces coated with electromagnetic radiation. The polynitrogen itself is kept stable through a synchronization of its wavelength.[2]

When the weapon is launched, the polynitrogen is propelled by an electromagnetically-driven catapult, which produces no shock that might potentially destabilize the substance. Upon impact, the polynitrogen would generate a colossal explosion, whose power would be ten times higher than that of the Multi-Purpose Burst Missile used by the Morgan model - roughly comparable to a tactical nuclear weapon in strength.[2]

Trivia

  • Similar to the FALKEN and Morgan, the ADLER is named after a bird. In this case, "Adler" is German for "eagle".
  • Should the aircraft had made it to either Ace Combat 5 or Zero, the ADA-01 would have become the first playable aircraft to possess externally mounted machine guns, a feat first achieved by the MiG-21bis Fishbed, Su-25 Frogfoot and Su-24MP Fencer in Ace Combat: Assault Horizon.
