The AH-64A Apache is a versatile attack helicopter manufactured by Boeing and McDonell Douglas.

Description

The Apache serves as the primary heavy attack helicopter for the United States Army and Israeli Military. Initially deployed in 1983, the Apache is a tried-and-true attack craft, armed with a plentiful array of weaponry and able to reach speeds of 153 knots. It follows a fairly conventional main rotor/tail rotor layout, but carries with it the mean looks of a workhorse aircraft ready to do business. Its primary armament is a 30mm M230 Chain Gun with 1200 rounds of ammunition. Additionally it can carry up to sixteen AGM-114K/L Hellfire missiles, seventy six Hydra rockets, and dual AIM-9M Sidewinders for self-defense. The AH-64D Longbow variant has upgraded avionics and most notably a dome above the main rotor housing a fire-control radar for improved target acquisition. It has seen extended use in the Persian Gulf and is currently performing operational duties with Coalition forces in Iraq.

Armament

  • Gun: 1x 30mm M230 Chain Gun
  • Missile: AGM-114 Hellfire
  • Air-to-Air Missile: AIM-92 Stinger

Gameplay

Most of the time in the Ace Combat series, these helicopters exist solely as missile launching platforms, almost like an airborne SAM. Apaches move very slowly through the air, leaving them as easy prey to the player. When not attacking the player, helicopters either will mindlessly move through the skies or concentrate on friendly targets, such as ground vehicles. Uncommonly, Apaches appear as ally-controlled.

Trivia

In Ace Combat 5, "Heartbreak One" mission, the hostile Apaches are somehow maneuverable and fast enough to dogfight the player's aircraft just like normal fighters.
