The burst missile is a long-range ballistic missile deployed by A World With No Boundaries in Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War, Erusea in Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies, and the Scinfaxi-class submarines in Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War. The weapon derives its name from the method of detonation, where it usually splits into multiple warheads, each detonating in a massive ballistic explosion in mid-air, destroying anything in a 2,500 ft. radius.
The burst missile is a long-range ballistic missile deployed by the Scinfaxi-class submarines in Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War. The weapon derives its' name from the method of detonation; splitting into multiple warheads and detonating in massive explosions in mid-air, destroying anything below 5,000 feet within several hundred feet of ground zero. The first use of burst missiles was during the Circum-Pacific War when the Yuktobanian Maritime Force engaged the Osean Maritime Defense Force in the Eaglin Straits, sinking the aircraft carriers Buzzard and Vulture, and destroying many of the escort fighters that were defending the ships from air attack at the time. However, a scaled-down prototype of this weapon was also observed being used by the ADFX-02 Morgan superfighter piloted by Larry "Solo Wing" Foulke at the close of the Belkan War in late 1995. The only known defense against burst missile attack is to either destroy the missiles in flight (only possible by the Arkbird) or zoom climb above the missiles' impact altitude before detonation. The maximum range of the burst missiles is not known, but has been shown to be considerable; a burst missile attack launched from the Hrimfaxi stationed in the Razgriz Straits was targeted at invading Osean forces on the Bastok Peninsula in southeastern Yuktobania, a distance of approximately 700 to 1,200 miles. The last recorded use of burst missiles was when the Hrimfaxi attempted to use them to defend herself against air attack from the 108th Tactical Fighter Squadron. It is also possible that burst missile technology was used in the development of the Nimbus Missiles employed by the Federal Republic of Estovakia during the Anean Continental War, as these missiles operate in a similar fashion.

The weapon derives its name from the method of detonation, where it usually splits into multiple warheads, each detonating in a massive ballistic explosion in mid-air, destroying anything in a 2,500 ft. radius.

History

Belkan War

The first use of burst missiles was observed at the close of the Belkan War in late 1995. Belka was the first country to produce burst missiles, but A World With No Boundaries, a paramilitary terrorist group, had gotten a hold of the technology. They fitted the burst missiles onto a specialized superfighter, the ADFX-02 Morgan, and allowed Larry Foulke to use them, and the Morgan, in battle.

After the Belkan War came to a close, Yuktobania gained the burst missile technology in the peace agreements (whereas Osea got a hold of Belka's laser technology). In doing so, they decided to create the Scinfaxi-class submarines, the Scinfaxi and Hrimfaxi. These projects went by largely unnoticed by the world, only appearing in newspaper articles when the prototype of the Scinfaxi was completed (the Hrimfaxi was never publicly announced). The burst missiles were unheard of for the next 10 years.

Usean Continental War

In 2005, during the Usean Continental War, ISAF troops had attempted a landing operation in Ice Creek. The Erusians fired cruise missiles at the landing forces in response, but an ISAF fighter pilot managed to shoot them all down. One of these missiles had an explosion very similar to a burst missile; Belka had probably sold the plans to Erusea in secret, but Erusea only managed to outfit a single cruise missile with the technology. Once more, the burst missiles had disappeared, for another five years.

Circum-Pacific War

In 2010, when the Circum-Pacific War broke out, the Osean Maritime Defense Force attempted to form a fleet of three aircraft carriers in the Eaglin Straits: the Buzzard, Vulture, and Kestrel. The Scinfaxi engaged from an unspecified distance and sunk the Buzzard and Vulture, as well as shooting down many of the escort fighters defending the ships, using the burst missiles. Osea dispatched a laser system to be outfitted to the Arkbird, a maneuverable orbiting spacecraft, to deal with the Scinfaxi and these missiles. During Operation Vanguard, the Scinfaxi was deployed to assist a Yuktobanian landing foce on Sand Island. However, with support from the Arkbird and 108th Tactical Fighter "Wardog" Squadron, Sand Island was holding its own. The Scinfaxi fired two burst missiles at Wardog and new recruits that were sent to assist, but the Arkbird intercepted both. Then the Scinfaxi fired three missiles simultaneously. The Arkbird could only destroy the third, but the fourth exploded and shot down all of the recruits. The operation continued, but the Arkbird fired a laser at the Scinfaxi itself, forcing it to surface. The Arkbird and Wardog together destroyed the Scinfaxi.

The Yukes weren't through yet. A month later, Osean forces, who had already landed on Yuktobanian soil, began forcing their way through the mainland. The Hrimfaxi began firing burst missiles at the landing forces. While they had taken a blow, they continued their operation while Sand Island sent the Wardog Squadron to deal with the Hrimfaxi, hiding in the Razgriz Straits (approximately 700 to 1,200 miles away from the landing forces, the largest recorded effective range of a burst missile). Without help from the Arkbird (sabotaged earlier), Wardog was alone, yet they still managed to destroy the Hrimfaxi.

Retirement

The last recorded use of the burst missile technology was by the Hrimfaxi in defense against the Wardog Squadron. It has been noted that the Nimbus Missiles, employed by the Federal Republic of Estovakia during the Anean Continental War, could have been inspired by the burst missiles, as they operate in a very similar fashion.

Defense

There are only two known defenses against a burst missile attack: destroy the warheads before they detonate, or evasive manuevers. When burst missiles are fired at ground targets, air units can maintain an altitude of above 5,000 feet to avoid the missiles. Ships can attempt evasive manuevers, but are not always successful.

The only known method of destroying the warheads before detonation was deployed by the Arkbird. A separate unit, such as an AWACS or an anti-submarine plane, must lock on to the missile when it is fired. From there, a data link must be sent to the Arkbird. Once the Arkbird receives the missile trajectory, it can fire its laser at an angle where the missile will have to cross. The missile, and the warheads, are then vaporized by the laser. However, with the destruction of the Arkbird by the Razgriz Squadron, it is unknown if any country has the means to destroy the missile or its warheads.

Trivia

 • It is ironic that Belka had both the burst missile and the laser, yet they were used against each other during the Circum-Pacific War, and both were destroyed.
