Princess Rosa Cossette D'Elise's pet dog was an adult Golden Retriever. He accompanied the Erusean Princess wherever she went.[3]
The dog was killed on Tyler Island while defending the Princess from conservative Erusean forces who attempted to shoot her.[1]
He is popularly nicknamed JPEG Dog by fans and the media.[4]
Origin[]
The name "JPEG Dog" was coined by fans reacting to his appearance in the sixth cutscene of Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown, "The Rose Emblem". It refers to the dog's apparent lack of animation while standing next to Cossette, Ionela, and Alma, all of whom are fully animated. The dog's in-game appearance sparked minor interest across many gaming news outlets.[4][5][6][7][8] Kotaku also suggested the name "Ace Combat Dog".[9]
The real Golden Retriever behind the role was named Toraji[10] (トラジ)[2] and was the pet of a member of Project Aces. According to brand director Kazutoki Kono, Toraji's appearance in the game is actually a video; the dog simply sat very still when it was instructed not to move, making it appear as though it was a static image.[11] Kono announced that Toraji had passed away a short time after the recording.[12]
