Description

The EA-6B Prowler is a four-seater A-6 Intruder variant derived from the need for a dedicated tactical jammer for the U.S Navy, and Marines. Eventually it would end up only serving the Navy, as the Air Force was satisfied with their EF-111 Raven. The EA-6B's primary role is the disruption of enemy communications and radars using its ALQ-99 Tactical Jamming System, which consists of various transmitters, receivers, and jamming pods carried as external stores. Its secondary role of SEAD (suppression of enemy air defenses) was added following the Vietnam War, equipping the aircraft with up to four HARM missiles along with its jamming equipment. The last one in service was recently retired, it is being replaced by the EA-18G Growler, the Prowler's most recent upgrade of ICAP III equips the aircraft with a new receiver antenna and Link 16 connectivity, as well as improved reactive jamming capability.
