The Estovakian Civil War (2007-2013) was an armed conflict in Estovakia. The war, triggered by the lack of resources following the impact of Ulysses 1994XF04 in 1999, involved several factions that ruled Estovakia over the lack of federal control

History

Ulysses' aftermath

The planetfall of the Ulysses asteroid over the northern hemisphere in July 1999 devastated Estovakia, destroying its economy and killing hundreds of people. In response, Emmeria began to deliver humanitarian aid to the country with NGO groups to assist in the rebuilding process. According to a report of the Amherst Research Institute published in 2014, it would take thirty years for Estovakia's economy to return to the level achieved in the '90s without external aid.

Over the next years, various independent factions rose across the regions of Estovakia, eroding the government's diminishing control over the country, causing Emmeria to suspend its relief activities over the tensions in the country. In April 2007, western Estovakia and the former capital city were taken over by the Lyes United Front. The Emmerian government, looking for a way to resume the delivery of humanitarian aid, responded by adapting their assistance measures to the LUF's reconstruction plans.

Conflict

In opposition to Emmeria's intentions, the Lyes faction used the relief aid to suppress dissent against their rule. The most notorious episode of action against their oppositors was the destruction of the supply lifelines to the city of Gledina, in which 200,000 people died after the shortage of resources. Their act horrified the other factions, and the Eastern Faction led by Gustav Dvornik declared war against them, plunging the country into war. Despite their actions, the LUF continued receiving Emmerian aid until 2010.

Various factions participated in the war, including the LUF, the Eastern Faction, the Independent Tariff Federation, the Island Coalition and the Northern Highlands Faction. As the conflict progressed, the two original sides expanded with the absorption of other groups; the Lyes Front assimilated the Tariff Federation, while the Northern Highlands joined the Eastern Faction on account of Dvornik's relations with Isaac Alenski, Lieutenant General of the former's air force.

After 1995, many soldiers from the fallen Belkan Federation emigrated to Estovakia, and participated in the front lines. One such individual was fighter pilot Lorenz Riedel, former member of the Gault Squadron, who supplied the Eastern Faction with research on heavy command cruiser technology, which became the foundation of the "Aerial Fleet Initiative". The group used Riedel's information to develop the P-1112 Aigaion and its escort ships, the P-1113 Kottos electronic warfare system and the P-1114 Gyges fire support aircraft.

With the aid of the aerial fleet, the Eastern Faction obtained victory in the war in 2013, and rapidly established a new government, mainly composed of former Eastern members.

Aftermath

The aftermath of the civil war was marked by a guerilla movement against the new administration by remnants of the Lyes United Front, who repeatedly carried out terror attacks against the government. Two particular incidents include the death of Isaac Alenski in a grenade attack in December 2013 and a raid on a base owned by Emmerian Army troops and humanitarian workers on February 4 2014, in which 28 were killed.
