The F-14D Super Tomcat was first introduced in Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War (and in Ace Combat 2 as the unplayable Z.O.E. "Captain"). It went on to become the primary variant of the Tomcat featured in Ace Combat. The F-14D is the third and final variation of the Tomcat.

In multiplayer, the F-14D Super Tomcat is quite capable in the right hands, even if its agility seems to be subpar, and could be considered a mid ranged support to F/A-18Fs making use of SAAMs or LASMs. Its 6AAM is very capable of base defence against incoming swarms of enemy attackers, while the SAAMs provide some sort of long range 'sniping' platform if you choose.

A seemingly disliked tactic with the Super Tomcats load of AIM-54C Phoenix missiles is that the whole 6AAM load can be dumbfired into the enemy HQ for a fair amount of damage dealt for a fighter, making it a viable atack option to draw enemies away from other objecives giving wingmen some breathing room. With the Throttle Boost and Boost and Turn skills in the same set, the F-14D is capable of running at speeds of in excess of 2,700km/h, being able to keep up with high teir fighters.

Trivia

  • In Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War, when chasing after the ace ZIPANG in Narrow Margin, if you look closely, it's notable that the F-14D actually can drop off a flare. Follow the F-14D from behind, then proceed to fire a missile. If lucky, the target will drop a flare in an attempt to fool it, but it's most likely that the projectile will quickly ignore the chaff and head for the main target.
  • In Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation, the F-14D is shown carrying 6 AIM-54 Phoenix on stations 1B, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8B. This is not an erroneous configuration, and would have been used in what was termed the "Chainsaw" tactic - if the CVBG were projected to be under attack by Soviet bombers and cruise missiles, every available F-14 would be loaded with all six AIM-54's, anticipating to shoot and recover to potentially launch again (if the carrier were still there). The F-14's max trap is 54,000 pounds, meaning the Tomcat could not recover on a carrier with all six Phoenix still loaded (the lightest F-14A with enough fuel for three go arounds would weigh about 55,670 pounds), but could land at an air base, and note that the Tomcat was anticipated to shoot its Phoenix compliment if all six were loaded. It's also peculiar that the weight of those six Phoenix missiles and their rails don't even hamper the F-14's maneuverability; six Phoenix missiles adds more than three tons of weight, and the Phoenix rails prevent the Tomcat's "pancake" from producing some 443sqft of lift, resulting in a heavy Tomcat with far higher wing loading and lower thrust to weight ratio. The SAAM loadout of 6 AIM-7M, however, were light enough for the Tomcat to successfully dogfight and still maintain BVR supremacy. Furthermore, in Assault Horizon, with the inclusion of 6AAM on the F-14D, all six Phoenix are functional and can be fired.
  • In Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception and Ace Combat X2: Joint Assault, the 3rd unlockable paint scheme for the F-14D Super Tomcat is the Iranian Air Force paint-scheme for the F-14A Tomcat.
  • On a game called Lock On: Modern Air Combat, the F-14A's final paint scheme is identical to the Razgriz paint scheme.
  • In Ace Combat: Assault Horizon, the F-14D is the aircraft with the largest number of in-game "stock" paint schemes, with 8 in all.
  • In Ace Combat: Assault Horizon, the F-14D is depicted with VF-103 paint scheme as DLC. VF-103 actually operated the F-14B, the closest comparison to the F-14D.  The F-14B utilized many of the avionics and systems from the F-14A, the chief differences being the new GE engines, newer RHAW gear and deletion of the glove vanes.
  • At a high speeds in game, the Tomcat of all variants can do he same counter maneuver used by Maverick in the movie Top Gun against Jester in the first training hop against the A-4 Skyhawk. With his aircraft precariously in front of Jester's A-4, Maverick says "I'll hit the brakes and he'll fly right by," and he then performs a pitch pulse (which resembles and works off the same principles as Pugachev's Cobra, albeit without the nose passing 90 degrees vertical), effectivley putting him behing his opponent. In reality, the pitch pulse wouldn't normally be performed above 325KIAS due to the potential for over-g, nor is it tactically sound, easily counterable by a high yo-yo; more than anything else, it was a familiarization maneuver for newer aircrews to acquaint them with the F-14's pitch authority.  With a bit of practice, it can be a handy trick in game.
