The F-15 S/MTD (Short Take-Off and Landing/Maneuver Technology Demonstrator) is an experimental F-15 Eagle model developed for experiments on the effects of thrust vectoring technology on aircraft maneuverability.
History
Strangereal
The F-15S/MTD was used by the Osean Air Defense Force and the Belkan Air Force during the Belkan War, in limited numbers by the former, mostly flown by their elite fighter squadrons, and flown more frequently by the latter. Belkan aces Darius "The Guillotine" Hertzsch (callsign Würger)[1], Sigwald Entenmann (callsign Habicht)[2], Michael Heimeroth (callsign Ofnir)[3], and Osea's Sorcerer Squadron[4] were notable users of this aircraft during the war.
During the Usean coup d'état, the URF's Beast Squadron flew F-15S/MTDs during their second encounter against the Scarface Squadron.[5]
During the Continental War, the F-15S/MTD was operated by both the ISAF Air Force and the Erusean Air Force. An Erusean ace known by the callsign "Halley" flew this plane during the ISAF's siege of Farbanti.[6]
The F-15S/MTD continued to be used by the OADF in limited numbers well onto 2010. During the Circum-Pacific War, Grabacr Squadron, then known as Osea's 8492nd Squadron which was "composed of former Belkan Air Force pilots acting as an aggressor squadron", was the only known OADF unit that flew F-15S/MTDs. They operated the advanced fighter jets until a fateful dogfight between them and Razgriz Squadron at Pobeda Peninsula, where they were shot down.[7]
The Leasath Air Force used this aircraft in limited numbers, most notably during the last stages of the Aurelian War. A Leasathian ace by the callsign Comet was known to fly this aircraft during the battle of Danern Straits.[8]
Joint Assault Universe
A Valahia ace Kelpie utilized a F-15S/MTD during Martinez Security's operation in Nevada.[9]
Infinity Universe
F-15S/MTDs were available to United Nations Forces pilots during Operation Eternal Liberation.
Game Analysis
Ace Combat Infinity
- "An experimental aircraft developed to increase maneuverability and designed for short takeoff and landing abilities. An electronic control system simultaneously operates the horizontal stabilizer, 2DCD thrust-vectoring nozzle, and canard wings, resulting in turning performance that exceeds the capabilities of conventional multirole aircraft. The oversized canard wings provide a large degree of dynamic lift allowing for increased maneuverability and stability during stall recovery, regardless of speed. S/MTD stands for "Short Takeoff and Landing/Maneuver Technology Demonstrator"."

Trivia
- In Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies, the F-15 S/MTD was erroneously portrayed as an F-15 ACTIVE, despite having the two-dimensional thrust vector nozzles of the STOL/MTD. Although both are based from the same TF-15B prototype, they were considered entirely separate aircraft by its main operators in NASA.
- The game's hangar description also contains major errors, describing it as possessing ACTIVE (Advanced Control Technology for Integrated VEhicles) technology and "forward-swept wings". However, the latter fact is partly correct, as the F-15 uses lightly swept wings.
- Notably, Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies also depicts the F-15 S/MTD as a single seater aircraft. All subsequent games have depicted it as a two-seater, like it's real life counterpart.
- Additionally in Ace Combat Infinity, the default paint scheme features visible United States Air Force roundels on the nose and main wing despite the fact that this aircraft was built for the United Nations Forces. An update later removed the roundels.
- In the Italian version of Ace Combat Infinity, the F-15 S/MTD Event Skin #02 has the description of the F-22A Event Skin #04.
