The Grumman F6F-5 Hellcat was a carrier-based fighter aircraft developed to replace the earlier F4F Wildcat in United States Navy service during WWII. Although the F6F bore a family resemblance to the Wildcat (not surprisingly, the original design was in fact a slightly modified version of the Wildcat, but this was changed later on), it was a completely new design powered by a 2,000 hp Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine, the same powerful engine that was installed on the F-4U Corsair and P-47 Thunderbolt. Some tagged it as the "Wildcat's big brother".
Ace Combat: Joint Assault
The F6F-5 first appeared in a mid-2010 gameplay trailer, where a Hellcat was shot down by a Valahia Su-37 Terminator over Midway. It was finally confirmed by the site Eurogamer.pt in late June, when they released media featuring the Hellcat and its Japanese counterpart, the A6M5 Zero.
The F6F-5 can be unlocked by getting a A+ rank on mission 1 via a second playthough on Free Mission or campaign on any difficulty, after which it will be available for purchase at the Hangar screen for $9,900. Statistics-wise, it is virtually identical to the A6M5, having low speed, weak armor and low combat capabilites, but exceptional stability and mobility.
Being a World War II-era plane, the Hellcat shares the Zero's inability to carry missiles, making it very difficult for it to defend itself against modern aircraft. It's stability allows it to conduct airstrikes without any major difficulty, although its low ammo capacity (being higher than the Zero's at 7-10) requires careful aiming. It can be armed with a Rocket Launcher, Unguided Bomb (Large) and the Napalm Bomb. To compensate for its combat capabilities, it is one of the few aircraft compatible with the Fuel Air Explosive Bomb.

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy
In Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy, the F6F-5 Hellcat is a secret fighter aircraft.
While this aircraft still retains the inability to use missiles, it is much more potent in Assault Horizon Legacy because of the new aerial maneuvers system as well as the enhanced tuning system. Also, the F6F-5 and the A6M5 Type Zero are both extremely agile, and their machineguns are devastating enough to destroy even the ADF-01 FALKEN. Overall, this aircraft is superior to that of the Joint Assault variant, due to being more potent as a usable fighter.

Trivia
- Like with the Zero, in real life, the Hellcat would be barely able to damage modern aircraft with its machine gun's 0.50 inch M2 Browning cartridge, though the 20mm cannon could work against them. However, for balance reasons, they are perfectly able to damage enemy aircraft.
