"We'll pass out from exhaustion before the enemy wears out."
― Gargoyle member[1]

Gargoyle Squadron, officially the 616th Strike Fighter Squadron, is an Osean Air Defense Force squadron assigned to the the International Union Peacekeeping Force.[2] The squadron saw deployment in the Lighthouse War.

History[]

On May 30, 2019, Gargoyle Squadron took part in Operation Dual Wielder, where its objective was to help secure air superiority in the airspace over the Chopinburg Rainforest. The mission was almost a success until Erusea deployed an Arsenal Bird to quickly regain control of the region. The resulting casualties caused by the Arsenal Bird prompted the IUN to order a withdrawal. While exfiltrating the airspace, Mihaly A. Shilage shot down and killed Gargoyle 1 as he attempted to escort Brownie out of the combat area. The squadron's remaining members managed to escape thanks to the efforts of Trigger and the Fort Grays Island Air Base Squadron.[3]

On June 6, 2019, Gargoyle Squadron participated in Operation Lighthouse Keeper, under secret orders by the IUN to destroy the International Space Elevator. While Mage and Golem Squadrons were escorting Mother Goose One, Gargoyle Squadron fired missiles at the space elevator. Almost all of them were intercepted by MQ-101s, thinning out their numbers, though one missile did hit the space elevator and cause minimal damage. Gargoyle continued to maintain air superiority during the rest of the operation. After the death of Osean Former President Vincent Harling and the arrival of Arsenal Bird Liberty, Gargoyle exfiltrated the combat zone.[1]

Trivia[]

  • Historically, most US Navy squadrons using the F-14 or its variants were designated as fighter squadrons (VF). However, Gargoyle is designated as a "strike fighter squadron" (VFA), a term usually reserved for multirole aircraft such as the F/A-18C Hornet and its variants, such as the F/A-18F Super Hornet. The VF designation was retired alongside the real-life F-14.
  • Champ's MiG-29A Fulcrum shares its "DN" tail code with Gargoyle Squadron's F-14Ds.
