Frederick Burford (フレドリック・バーフォード)[1][2] serves as the operations commander for Martinez Security's M42 Squadron. Burford was a primary leader in Martinez Security's operations against the Valahia and the Golden Axe Plan Private Army. The bulk of Burford's part in these conflicts was acting as Antares Squadron's commander through the Airborne Warning and Control System aircraft with the callsign AWACS Canopus.
Biography[]
USAF service[]
Burford previously served in the United States Air Force and was highly respected by his colleagues. His career advancement through the ranks forced him to stay on the ground for longer periods of time. His growing dissatisfaction with the lack of air combat led to him choosing to leave the Air Force. Since his departure, the Air Force has repeatedly asked him to return since he has helped many Martinez pilots become aces.[1][2]
Fighting the Valahia[]
Stopping the Golden Axe Plan[]
Personality[]
Burford is shown to be a very responsible man which can be seen after Rigel Squadron defected from Martinez Security, Burford blamed himself for their betrayal. He also is shown to be calm and very trusting of Antares. He is also known for having a strong sense of justice, going as far as leaving the IUPF to fight the Golden Axe Plan. It is also known that he has a daughter living on the US West Coast, but Burford said that "She doesn't need a father hanging around, not at her age."

Trivia[]
- Burford's AWACS aircraft appears in both Steel Axe and Alarm Clock, the only time a radio operator or AWACS has ever appeared in mission gameplay.
- "Canopus" is a reference to a star by the same name in the constellation Carina. The star was named after the mythological Canopus, a ship pilot and navigator, fitting for Burford's role in Joint Assault.
- The star Canopus appears in the southern celestial hemisphere, where Crux also appears. Crux is the namesake for Eugene Solano's callsign and for Gryphus One's nickname, the "Southern Cross".
