Handful of Hope is the eighth mission of Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War.
History
Since Yuktobania's large scale offensive failed, they've ceased most combat operations against Osea. Wardog squadron was split into pairs and were requested to patrol the coastline area outside of the Osean AA defense system in Akerson Hill. While there, Blaze and Nagase received a radio transmission from an Osean C-5 Galaxy, Mother Goose one. The plane was in a top secret mission, so it wasn't transmitting a friendly ID signal. As a result, a friendly AA missle was fired at them and destroyed their radar system, so they needed to be guided through the AA system. While guiding the plane, Wardog heard and enemy transmission over the radio, saying they were going to shoot down the airplane. Blaze and Nagase managed to get the transport craft through the AA system, but it was starting to have mechanical troubles. Some enemy aircraft entered the battle zone, as Chopper and Grimm arrived. Wardog shot down almost all hostile airplanes. A shot was heard over the radio coming from the transport plane. Surprsingly, who answered was President Vincent Harling of the Osean Federation, asking for help, calling himself Mr. Cargo. He said that they were trying to get to the neutral country of North Point for peace negotiations but there was a spy onboard who killed the captain, wounded the co-pilot and then was killed. Harling's secretary was piloting the airplane, and Wardog was guiding them for an emergency landing at a field, but that field was crowded with electric generator windmills that needed to be destroyed for the airplane to land safely. The trabsport craft made it to the ground, but Wardog couldn't stay there for much longer because of their fuel state. An Osean squadron, the 8492nd squadron arrived and said that they would take care of the rescue operations, so Wardog headed back to Sand Island Air Force Base.
Trivia
- It's weird that a airplane going from Oured to North Point fly over that area. Folowing the usual route, the plane shoul takeoff and fly eastwards directly to Usea, not getting even close to Akerson Hill that is to ne Northeast of Oured.
- When the spy shoots inside the transport plane, Chopper says: "It's dutch rolling." though there isn't any country that is named Netherlands in Strangereal, so this expression would be out of sense.
