An Emmerian F-16C performing a High-G Turn to evade an incoming missile
- "Use High-G Turns to your advantage during scrambles. It'll allow you to get behind the enemy quickly."
- ― Ulrich Olsen[1]
The High-G Turn is a maneuver that allows the player to make a sharper turn than normal. While the aircraft will lose a substantial amount of speed, High-G Turns can be used to effectively evade incoming missiles or enemy aircraft, or to continue pursuing an advanced enemy. Using a High-G Turn too long can cause the aircraft to enter a stall.
High-G Turns were introduced in Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation. The system was later simplified for Ace Combat: Assault Horizon and Ace Combat Infinity, but the original implementation reappeared in Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy. High-G Turns appeared once more in Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown,[2] where players can select which system type to use.
Description[]
Ace Combat 7 allows players to select from Type A or Type B to perform High-G Turns.
Type A[]
In Ace Combat 6 and Assault Horizon Legacy, the player can perform a High-G Turn by holding both the acceleration and deceleration buttons, followed by pitching up or yawing. High-G Turns engaged by yawing tend to be less useful in practice. Pitching down and rolling do not engage High-G.
Some aircraft in Ace Combat 6 feature different implementations of High-G Turns. For example, the CFA-44 Nosferatu and some DLC aircraft will lock into a High-G Turn endlessly until the player stops applying positive pitch or yaw, or the aircraft stalls. Other Ace Combat 6 aircraft in general have largely different speed loss rates; for example, the Rafale M barely loses any speed and can sustain High-G for a long time, while the Su-47 Berkut can stall from High-G in less than three seconds.
Assault Horizon Legacy is the first time enemy units can also implement High-G Turns. The player can counteract enemy High-G Turns with Attack Maneuvers.
Type B[]
High-G Turns in Assault Horizon and Infinity work differently. Instead of holding two buttons, High-G Turns are automatically performed if the player attempts to make a sharp turn while using the air brake button. It also applies to negative pitch as well as positive, but it is not compatible with yaw. It works as a quick, short burst rather than the sustained tighter turn of the previous system.
Trivia[]
- When performing a High-G Turn, vapor will form on the aircraft's wings.
- All player-controlled aircraft are capable of performing a High-G Turn, except for some specific examples in Ace Combat 6 DLC. The Su-33 -TYPE ACE2-, F-16C -TYPE ACE 2-, and Typhoon -TYPE ACE3- are incapable of High-G, since Ace Combat 2 and Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere did not feature High-G.
