The Sikorsky MH-60L Blackhawk is a modified UH-60 Blackhawk assault helicopter used by the US Army 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment "Nightstalkers". A new avionics suite includes interactive Multi-Function Displays (MFDs), Forward-Looking Infrared (FLIR), digital map generator, and terrain avoidance/terrain following multi-mode radar. It has full shipboard operability.It is capable of providing long-range airlifts far into hostile territory in adverse weather conditions. Other modifications include auxiliary internal fuel tanks, two M134D miniguns, an air-to-air refueling probe, and an external hoist. . A modification for the MH-60L allows it to be configured as a Direct Action Penetrator, or DAP. The DAP is capable of being armed with Hellfire missiles, an M230 Chain Gun 30 mm automatic cannon, Hydra 70 2.75-inch (70 mm) rockets, and M134D gatling guns operated as door guns or fixed forward.

Description

The MH-60L Blackhawk is a modified UH-60L primarily used for special operations. It is upgraded with an AN/APQ-174 millimetric wave radar and a Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) system, as well as various protective measures, such as laser detectors, chaff and flare dispensers, infrared jamming systems, and missile plume detectors.

The DAP is, an MH-60L with a kit added to provide close air support capability. The kit allows the airframe to be loaded with a number of both anti-air and air-to-ground weaponry on the shortened External Stores Support System (ESSS) stub wings.

The MH-60L has been featured in the movie Black Hawk Down and gained fame for its use in the Battle of Mogadishu in Somalia in 1993.
