Meson Cannons are energy weapons produced by Aurelia.
Design
Meson Cannons are charged particle beam cannons powered by Mesons, subatomical particles formed by a quark and an antiquark bound together by strong interaction. By removing Mesons from certain materials (including aluminium and berylium), these weapons can emit a beam of decaying muons through a linear particle accelerator (linac).
The cannons were first created by Aurelia as a defense system mounted on the Atmos Ring, but further research was aborted due to energy costs and the lack of a notable reason to install them. The Meson Cannon's firing range is limited to a few kilometers by the collapse of the muons, but the beams are able to move at sub-light speeds, making evasion extremely difficult. Due to the nature of charged particle beams, the emission direction of the beam can be changed.
History
The Meson Cannons were installed on the Atmos Ring by Leseath military when Griswall was fallen under their hands.
By the time Gryphus One was deployed to liberate Griswall, the Meson Cannons' performance may change depending on his choice of mission route.
If the MBSRs were brought in by XC-01 transport planes from Monte Breeze to Griswall, the Meson Cannons' power would be enhanced by allowing greater irradiation time per fire. If they were intercepted by Gryphus One beforehand, the Meson Cannons would fire in short bursts instead. They had to be destroyed in order for the city to be liberated.
Alternatively, the Aurelian Liberation Corps were inside the Atmos Ring after driving out the Leasath forces from the inside, could disable the Meson Cannons' power during Gryphus One's assault on Griswall, but this would open the city's gates, allowing the surrounding Leasath ground forces to attack them directly. In this case, the Meson Cannons will not be destroyed for the city to be liberated.
Trivia
- The Meson Cannon Array is remarkbly similar to Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies's Stonehenge Turret Network, as evidenced by its layout.
