A Mission Update is a common gameplay feature used in almost every Ace Combat game released to date.
Description
Mission Updates alter the objective of a mission the player is currently in the middle of, usually to fulfill a plot element. In some cases, it completely alters the original objective and focus of the mission. A Mission Update could also signal a change in the background music.
Appearances
Ace Combat 2
Ace Combat 3
Ace Combat 04
- The Northern Eye - After destroying the radar, the player must cross the Return Line.
- Lifeline - After achieving 2000 points within the time limit, the player must cross the Return Line.

- Ice Bound - After the Naiad has surfaced due to a hull breach, the player must defend it from enemy bombers and destroy an iceberg before the Naiad collides with it.
- Standoff in the Skies I - After all the Gleipnir's defenses are down, the Gleipnir will turn upside down to use it's Shock Cannon as a last resort. The player must destroy it to complete the mission.

- ― AWACS Sky-Eye
- Rescue - After destroying the targets, the player must cross the Return Line by flying in the ravine and avoiding Stonehenge's attacks.
- Stonehenge - After securing safety for the ground forces, the player must destroy the jamming towers and then the railguns themselves.
- Far Eastern Front - The player must shoot down the QFA-44, the MQ-90Ls supporting it, and the Aigaion-class heavy command cruiser.
Outside of the Campaign, Online Co-Op Missions also feature Mission Updates. These initiate when all enemies on the map are destroyed or when three minutes have elapsed, whichever comes first. One of the updates below is selected at random depending on the map, and players have to complete the objective as fast as possible to return to the match that was at hand. Completing the update will result in 10,000 bonus points being applied to both teams, and is one of the requirements for an S rank.[1]
In the below chart, HARD variants of missions have the same Mission Updates as their standard counterparts.

A Scinfaxi-class submarine will surface. The background music changes to "Scinfaxi" from the Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War Original Soundtrack.
The Scinfaxi-class sub is equipped with UCAVs and burst missiles as well as AA guns and SAMs that cannot be targeted or destroyed. Its health depends on the number of player slots in the room; it has the least health in a 2v2 room, moderate health in a 3v3, and the most health in a 4v4. The submarine awards 24,000 points to the player that destroys it, and the UCAVs award 800 points each. During TML and ACD, if the submarine is not destroyed within 2 minutes, it submerges permanently and the emergency mission is failed; in the latter, AWACS Sky-Eye comments that they have been forced to abandon the allied facility. During PD, the submarine will never submerge and will remain above water until players destroy it.
Multiple unidentified flying objects are approaching. Elite enemy air forces are rapidly approaching. Reports indicate that enemy air forces equipped with special missiles are now in the air. |
||||||||||||||
The T-50s are highly maneuverable, with the ability to perform extremely high-degree turns at fast speeds. According to AWACS Sky-Eye, they can change their missiles; one type of missile is fast but weak, and the other is powerful but slow. One of the pilots is an ace known as Specialist. Each of the T-50s awards 4,800 points.

Trivia
- Breaking Arrows seems to feature a Mission Update of some kind (the lone missile at the end) but it is only indicated as such by the music change and SkyEye's transmissions; the Mission Update notifier never flashes.
- Ever since and including Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation, Mission Updates have been paired with another gameplay feature: checkpoints.
Infinity Trivia
- Mission Updates do not occur during Special Raid missions.[1]
- The squadron of bombers in Aerospace Center Defense is a reference to the Erusian bombers that appeared during Shattered Skies from Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies. Shattered Skies takes place over the Comona Islands, from which the Comona Base is based off of. However, in Aerospace Center Defense, the bombers spawn to the south rather than the west in Shattered Skies.
- The cruise missiles in Dubai is likely a reference to Gracemeria Patrol from Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation. Both require players to shoot down missiles, and both take place in a city at night. The background music further supports this.
- The International Airport Mission Update in Dubai is likely a reference to Chain Reaction from Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War. Both feature a civilian airport occupied by a variety of ground forces, alongside several fighter jets and transport planes, and both take place in a city at night. The background music further reinforces this.
- Kottos and Gyges' formation during their appearance in a Mission Update (Gyges flying above Kottos) is very reminiscent of the battle against two Orgoi during Alarm Clock from Ace Combat: Joint Assault.
- The jammers in Alps Air Corridor are likely referencing The Northern Eye from Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies. Both involve destroying defended radio towers, although the ones in the Alps actually emit radar jamming signals unlike the ones over Mt. Shezna.
- During Area B7R Dogfight Battle, Stonehenge is called upon during the Mission Update to provide fire support against the players. However, this only occurs when the Mission Update does not involve 5th generation fighter aircraft or the QFA-44 Carmilla.
