The New Russian Federation (NRF) was an anti-government faction of the Russian armed forces that rose to power in 2015 in the Assault Horizon universe. The faction was primarily opposed by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the Russian Loyalists. It was primarily backed by Blatnoi, a Russian crime syndicate.

After their defeat in Russia and the United States of America, including the deaths of major members of the organization, the NRF was considerably weakened. Their subsequent actions were restricted to acts of terrorism around the globe.

History

Uprising

The NRF was formed in late December 2015, shortly after members of the Russian military overthrew the ruling government and assumed control of Russia's capital, Moscow. Ivan Stagleishov led the coup, which consisted of troops from all branches of the Russian military. This included pilots in the Russian Air Force (with Andrei Markov and Sergei Illich among them) and surface vessels of the Russian Navy.

Starting on December 31, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)'s Task Force 108 began cooperating with Russian loyalists to oppose the NRF, including rescuing the Prime Minister.

Loss of Moscow

On January 15, Task Force 108 and the Russian loyalists launched an operation to liberate Moscow from the NRF. During the battle, an NRF spokesperson broadcasted propaganda over loudspeakers in the city. This propaganda claimed that NATO wishes to conquer the world and destroy Moscow's heritage, and that the NRF wishes to protect Moscow from such a future.

Despite the NRF leveling Moscow's suburbs with one Trinity missile, the NATO-Russian coalition liberated the city, including Colonel William Bishop shooting down a bomber carrying a second Trinity missile as well as Andrei Markov. Stagleishov attempted to offer the one remaining Trinity missile in exchange for political immunity. Markov, who survived being shot down, murdered Stagleishov and assumed control of the NRF.

Post-defeat

As part of Markov's vendetta against the United States, he led the NRF in a major assault on Miami, Florida and Washington, D.C. The United States armed forces repelled the attack, and Colonel Bishop shot down and killed Markov over D.C. airspace.

Despite the failure of the coup, remnants of the NRF continued existing well after the war. In 2018, ex-Russian Air Force aircraft attacked United States assets in Tokyo, Japan in what became known as the "Haneda Incident".
