Patrick James Beckett is an Osean mercenary who served in the Belkan War. He was the third member of the Galm Squadron, replacing Larry Foulke.

Biography

Early life

Some time before 1995, Beckett embarked on a journey across the Osean Federation on a bike. As well, he also met his girlfriend around this time.

Belkan War

Driven by a desire of bringing peace, Patrick joined the Belkan War as a mercenary for the Allied forces, serving as the third member of the Crow Team. His first known combat action was assisting the Galm Team in destroying the Excalibur laser weapon during Operation Judgment on 23 May, 1995.

Two weeks later, Beckett became one of the Ustio pilots involved in the carpet bombing of Hoffnung, where he verbally clashed with Larry Foulke over the Allied bombers' indiscriminate attack. He and Crow, along with Galm, were dispatched on June 6 to assist the Allied siege of Sudentor during the Battle of Waldreich. The mercenaries stopped a Belkan bomber squadron armed with nuclear weapons, but failed to prevent the detonations across the Waldreich Mountains.

After the disappearance of Foulke in Waldreich, Patrick was reassigned as Cipher's wingman. He accompanied the mercenary in various operations against Belkan troops rebelling against the country's surrender to Osea, and the entirety of the A World With No Boundaries uprising. After the destruction of the XB-0 Hresvelgr in Christmas 1995, he intercepted an encrypted message from Foulke himself, reacting with shock upon learning the message.

On 31 December, he and Cipher were involved in the final suppression of the AWWNB uprising during the attack on Avalon. He and Cipher flew through the Mund Valley and destroyed the V2 missile's control systems, preventing the launch of the weapon. When the launch was averted, Foulke entered Avalon airspace with the ADFX-02 Morgan, attempting to kill Cipher with the jet's Tactical Laser System. Beckett noticed the beam and violently dove in Cipher's way; the laser pierced through his canopy, killing him and sending his F-16C towards the earth.

After the war, a makeshift grave in his memory was erected in the flooded Avalon, with a chunk of metal from his Falcon adorned with the Crow Team's emblem acting as a gravestone.

To date, PJ Beckett remains the only plot-important wingman in the Ace Combat series whose face has not been revealed.
PJ's actual fate after the events of "ZERO" is a known source of speculation. Although the probability of PJ surviving the attack is extremely small, the data regarding all pilots in the game lists him as "Missing in Action" as opposed to "Killed in Action." This is supported by the fact that it is possible to see his plane still flying after the attack, plus his plane is only seen trailing thick gray smoke (which indicates "Neutralized") as opposed to flaming (which indicates "Destroyed") after it was hit, which means he could have survived. A combat pilot's status is only changed to "K.I.A." in which either his death has been confirmed, or the situation would be very unlikely for him to survive; some (but not all) Belkan aces shot down by Cipher during the First Battle of Waldreich Mountains who had ejected there were believed to have died either from radioactive poisoning or injuries sustained before or after ejecting, and thus they were considered "K.I.A." All that was found was a piece of sheet metal from PJ's plane. Assuming he was dead, someone (probably his girlfriend) painted his initials on the shard and propped it at the base of a tree, where it remained ten years later. However, some have speculated that PJ escaped the battle to live a life of anonymity.

PJ is a Polo player, the only AC character to say which sport he plays. This also indicates that PJ comes from a wealthy family because polo is considered an aristocratic game in which the care for the horses and field which to play it on requires a substantially above-average income.
