"It feels like the cliff is closing in on us. Flying here is nearly impossible. Don't you think so?"
Hans Grimm[1]

Payavlenie Ravine is a network of winding river gorges located in the highlands of northeastern Yuktobania, due north of the Vladimir Mountains. The ravine and its surrounding area are blanketed by Yuktobania's anti-aircraft defense system. In 2010, during the Circum-Pacific War, the ravine served as the site of a Yuktobanian resistance hideout.

Geography[]

Payavlenie Ravine is a series of canyons and gorges carved through the highlands' sedimentary rock by an unnamed river that flows into the northern Fuscum Sea.[2][3] The ravines vary from wide expanses to narrow bottlenecks, which make flying within them quite hazardous. When viewed from above, the ravines form an approximate rectangle that "spirals" inward; one of the river's branches terminates in a small lake near the center of the rectangle. Vegetation is largely absent in the area surrounding the ravine, possibly due to the highlands' extreme elevation and scant precipitation. A railway line traverses the ravine via a series of bridges and tunnels.[1]

History[]

Sometime during the Circum-Pacific War in 2010, the Yuktobanian resistance began using an outpost at the center of Payavlenie Ravine as a base of operations against the military regime that arisen in the wake of Prime Minister Seryozha Viktrovich Nikanor's disappearance.

Sometime between December 10–16, a nuclear warhead—intended for the Belkan aggressors operating within Yuktobania—fell into the hands of the resistance, which transported the warhead to their Payavlenie base for dismantlement. Captain Jack Bartlett, who had joined the resistance after his capture and escape from Yuktobanian military custody, relayed Payavlenie's coordinates to the OFS Kestrel. On December 16, the newly formed Razgriz Squadron was dispatched to Payavlenie to eliminate the Varyag Special Forces units that were scouring the ravine in an attempt to recover the warhead. During the operation, Ofnir Squadron engaged the Razgriz pilots, but was decisively shot down.[1] The resistance members ultimately disarmed the nuclear warhead and proceeded to sail their submarine out of Payavlenie and into the Fuscum Sea, where they disposed of the weapon's dismantled components.[3]

Trivia[]

  • "Payavlenie" is a misspelled phonetic translation of the Russian word "poyavleniye" (появление), which in English translates to "appearance", "emergence", or "uprise".
  • Payavlenie Ravine reappears in Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War as a multiplayer map.[4]
