The first Blackbird appears in Mission #08, Shattered Skies. It is the first target the player locks into upon beginning the mission. The Blackbird flies at 30,000 ft. elevation, around the Riass Space Center's proximity. It can be easily tracked in the radar as it is a very fast orange arrow. If not intercepted in time, the aircraft will accelerate and escape the battle zone. The second Blackbird is present in Mission #16, Whiskey Corridor. It is found in the south-western corner of the map at about 15,000 ft., just north of the Return Line.

The SR-71 Blackbird makes a single appearance in Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War. It is the Yuktobanian Air Force spy aircraft that the Wardog Squadron need to pursues in Mission #01, Shorebirds. Due to the Wardog Squadron not being allowed to attack, it can only be shot down using the gun. Doing so, however, will result in a mission failure.

However, once given permission to engage it is possible to shoot the SR-71 down with the machine gun. This can be tricky as no targeting assistance is given, and the plane has a habit of rapidly decelerating and causing you to crash if you're too close behind.

In Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War, when the Galm and Crow Squadrons arrive to Tauberg Plateau in mission 09 ("Sword of Annihilation/Operation Judgement"), the Belkan Ace Jens "Rabe" Thon (Assault Record 067) takes off from Excalibur on an SR-71 Blackbird and attempts to escape south at high altitude. Due to Rabe's speed, it is recommended to use a fast aircraft (e.i. Mirage 2000D or MiG-31 Foxhound) to intercept the Blackbird. An attacker like the A-10A can intercept the Blackbird by accelerating and checking the radar to confirm its position, at an altitude of 18,000 ft. Also, normal planes can use long-range weaponry (i.e. SAAMs) to attack the SR-71 at mid-range. The latter however, is not recommended due to danger of being caught in Excalibur's laser when trying to keep aimed at the enemy.

The SR-71 Blackbird is a long-range reconnaissance aircraft designed by Lockheed Corporation.

History

Strangereal

The Blackbird has seen use by a select number of countries around the globe.

In the Belkan War, one Blackbird airframe piloted by Belkan ace Jens Thon, callsign Rabe, flew during the Allied attack on the laser weapon Excalibur, but it was destroyed by the Galm Team.[1]

Two Blackbird airframes were known to have been used by the Usean Rebel Forces in the Usean coup d'état, flying alongsisde a pair of U-2s during their high-altitude retreat via the Amber Mountains. Despite their advantage, Phoenix of the Scarface Squadron managed to shoot down the reconnaissance aircraft.[2]

During the Continental War, two airframes were utilized by the Federal Erusea Air Force. The first was used during Operation Countdown but it was shot down.[3] The second was utilized during Operation Sandstorm with a similar outcome.[4]

In the days leading up to the start of the Circum-Pacific War, the most well-known use of the SR-71 was done by the Yuktobanian Air Force, performing a recon mission near Cape Landers in Osea. An Osean SAM hit the plane, but it kept on flying towards low altitude at sea in an attempt to flee. This prompt Osean command to send the Wardog Squadron to try to forcing it to land, though it was later interrupted by Yuktobanian reinforcements. Surprisingly, it exploded shortly after the reinforcements arrived.[5]

A single Estovakian Air Force Blackbird was deployed during the Rargom Beach offensive, but it was destroyed.[6]

Joint Assault Universe

A single airframe was utilized by ace pilot Buzzword of the Valahia. It was later shot down by the Antares Squadron during the attack on the Mora Jamming Station.[7]

Infinity Universe

The Blackbird has seen limited use by the USEA Federation. It was known to have been sighted over the Troia Route before being shot down by pilots of the United Nations Forces.[8]
