- "Why are we the only escorts here?![1]"
- ― Erich Jaeger
Scylla and Charybdis is the 9th mission of the original Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere. Depending on the Player's actions, this mission can either split off into the UPEO (III) arc or the Neucom (I) arc.
Mission Story[]
- "Another message has arrived from Commander Park, this time with a top-secret mission. According to it, Delegate Clarkson is going to Cape Rainy to mediate a truce between General Resource and Neucom. Fiona would accompany the Delegate as an in-flight escort, with two planes as the only other escorts: the Player and Erich. Feeling somewhat uneasy about the lack of escorts, the group departed for Cape Rainy.[1]"

Briefing[]
Our very own UPEO Del. Clarkson,
who has brought
General Resource and Neucom to a truce before,
is heading to Cape Rainy
on a personal plane to mediate a ceasefire.
You and Erich are to escort his plane.
Fiona will be accompanying the Del.
on board as a bodyguard.
As this is a top-secret mission,
it will be carried out covertly by a select few.
...Dismissed.[1]

Objectives[]
Mission Start[]
The mission's primary targets are a squadron of five General Resource F/A-32Cs that the Player must destroy while also protecting Clarkson's personal plane. Abyssal Dision and Keith Bryan are also present, piloting a F-22C Raptor II and a F/A-32C, respectively, but cannot be targeted. Once the five hostiles are shot down, the mission ends with a Mission Accomplished.
Mission Update[]
After the mission, Rena arrives along with an allied R-101U, as Commander Park informs the UPEO units that Clarkson and Fiona have been engaging in espionage. Their new orders are to shoot down Clarkson's personal plane.
Decision Point[]
The Player can choose to shoot down the personal plane, killing Clarkson, Fiona and everyone else onboard, leading to Fates Intertwined, or shoot down the R-101U, leaving UPEO and following Fiona, which will lead to Power for Life.
If the Player does not shoot down either, Rena will eventually shoot the personal plane down herself, which will also take the Player to Fates Intertwined.
