The Su-35 Super Flanker[1] (Su-35 スーパーフランカー)[2] is a prototype fighter aircraft. It is an advanced development of the Su-27 Flanker-B featuring improved avionics and canards for increased maneuverability.

The Su-35 Super Flanker was featured in some of the earliest Ace Combat games, making its debut in Ace Combat 2. The Su-35S Flanker-E replaced the Super Flanker in Ace Combat: Assault Horizon and every Su-35 appearance since.

History

The Su-35 first saw action on both sides of the Continental War. Erusea used a limited number of Su-35s in the latter stages of the war,[citation needed] and at least one ISAF Air Force pilot flew an Su-35 during Operation Autumn Thunder.[3] One Erusean ace, Neujmin, also used this aircraft earlier in the war.[4]

Ofnir Squadron used four Su-35s during Operation Riverbed to engage the Razgriz Squadron. Razgriz shot down all of the Su-35s during an intense dogfight inside a canyon.[5] Ofnir later used the S-32 instead of the Su-35 during Operation Arcadia.[6]

Trivia

  • Since Phoenix does not have access to an Su-35 in Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy, its appearance in Ace Combat 2 is considered non-canon. However, the Su-35 livery in Ace Combat 2 was later featured in Ace Combat Infinity on the Su-35S as the Su-35 -Scarface1- 4 Star Aircraft Special Aircraft.
  • During the development of Ace Combat 2, the Namco team wanted the player to be able to perform the Flanker family's signature "Pugachev's Cobra" with the Su-35. Towards the development deadline, they managed to allow the AI to perform the maneuver, but were unable to let the player perform it. Right before the game's release, the development crew modified some parameters to allow players to perform a rudimentary Cobra, but the feature was ultimately removed.[citation needed]
  • The Su-35 Super Flanker was first known as the Su-27M. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, Sukhoi rebranded the aircraft as the Su-35.
  • An Su-35 Super Flanker with added thrust-vectoring engines eventually led to the Su-37 Terminator.
