First off, I want to say that I do not mean this post to be a complaint thread or critical of the game. We play every game for a finite amount of time, or at least there is a point in which we stop playing a game as religiously as we once did. This is simply my take on the state of the game now and the direction my interest is going.
First off, I am not a cash player. But I do play my 6 free sorties per day plus a few more throughout the week. I have about 90 stocked sorties and do have a marathon day every few months where I burn through 40 or 50 sorties. I have been playing this way fairly consistently since last July.
For me, the game is very nearly at it's end. I've gotten an ADF-01, a Wyvern, and a FB22 to lvl 10, I've opened up all of the parts I feel like I need, and gotten all of the special weapons I use to lvl 5. The problem is, everything else that is "better" than what I have feels unattainable. The superplanes are just too expensive to buy, and even if I did save up to buy one, the upgrade costs are so much that getting one of them to a point where they are better than what I'm using is not realistic. All of the good tournament prize planes are top 200 which is not realistic for a free player, and even if I got one (the superplane prizes, obviously) it's right back to the problem where they are too expensive to upgrade anyway. Even taking a lower cost plane to lvl 15 or beyond is so cost prohibitive that it's not worth my time.
The point I am getting at is that I just feel like I've reached a point where I've accomplished everything I can accomplish and that's that. It's kinda like beating a single player game but not getting all accomplishments to 100%. Yes, there is stuff I could do, but it's just to do it. I'm not really progressing through the game anymore. And so maybe it's done.
So what's your take? Are you in the same boat as me?
Or are you motivated to play for those very expensive planes and top 200 prizes?
Or are you so content with playing with what you have and maybe building up your lower level planes that there is no end in sight for you?
And if you're still highly motivated to play more, what WOULD it take for you to say, "ok, I'm done"?
I'm really similar to your viewpoint. Even in free-to-play games, everyone has that one goal they aim towards. Whether it's getting a specific aircraft to a specific level, or earning a specific rank on a specific mission, etc. There's that one thing that feels like completion in every game.
For me, I've almost hit it. I own everything on the standard Aircraft Tree except the B-2A, the overpriced aircraft at the end of the tree, and the ADF-01 FALKEN. My only progression at this point is purchasing the FALKEN, and then I'll essentially be "done".
In my opinion, what you do in a game after you've beaten it is completely subjective. If you've made it to the point in Infinity where you feel that you're done progressing, then figure out how you'd treat it like any other game. Maybe you want to go back to the humble beginnings and give the lesser aircraft a whirl, such as the F-4E or the F-16C? I know a lot of people do that for fun regardless. Or maybe you still haven't given HARD missions a try? Put together a group and try to aim for the elusive S rank, especially now that we have the OEL for Tokyo HARD. Or maybe that's it and you feel that you're absolutely done with the game unless they bring an event you'd want to participate in. That's cool as well, take a break.
I love how subjective a video game experience can be, it's a lot different from other forms of media in that regard. (I suppose that was partly the theme of Sony's E3 conference this year.) What you do after you "beat" Infinity is entirely up to you, and they're still going to keep adding more content in the immediate future. We've got the CFA-44 to look forward to (hopefully it won't be overpriced) as well as the possibility of propeller aircraft. And then, who knows? Maybe a new Special Raid to conquer. We'll just have to see.
For myself, I'm mostly in it to keep progressing as much as possible. I'm currently working on the F-2A -Nagase-, and then maybe I'll take the X-02 higher and work on other aircraft in the meantime. But at this point, it really is just playing for fun.
For most games I'm a completionist, but I gave up on that in Infinity pretty early on because of the F2P model. I'm near the end of the tree so there aren't really any more planes I'm aiming for anyway. Personally, I think I'll be done soon after they stop releasing new content like new missions and (lower-tier) aircraft.
I really have no idea when i'll be "done" with the game. The way i've been continously playing it since launch makes me believe that i'll play it all the way until the servers shut down. I have a fair lot to do in Infinity, things that I wanna upgrade and so on, and i'm certainly busy it. But when i'll be done? No clue.
Yeah, I'm a bit in between. I practically play religiously at this point, but that mainly entails around an hour a day using up up plied fuel. I've spent credits and stocked fuel liberally, upgrading a lot of stuff along the way. I have over half a dozen planes at LVL 10, nearly all unlocked weapons maxed. I've aI med for top 1000 in most tournaments since about last September, and recently I've started experimenting with parts combos on my top planes to see if I can eek out a more favorable match-ups. Honestly, I'lol probably keep going for a while, maybe even until the game is shut down. That's just how much I love the series, despite the deep flaws I see in this iteration.
That being said, I have been thinking about this since the lackluster Infinity anniversary. With the model they've got going, anything they add here on out is likely to be either a variant of something already in-game, or another AC3 plane priced extremely high. There isn't a whole lot left to keep the attention of anyone who has been playing for even a few months now.
I think that probably means we are at the point where people will find their willingness to put things off to play this game will diminish. Their existing routine will get interupted, and they'll have little compelling reason to get back into it. I don't think most will just decide they're going to stop, it will just sorta happen that way.
I guess it's the 3rd option for me. Or are you so content with playing with what you have and maybe building up your lower level planes that there is no end in sight for you?
Personally, I'm done with the tournaments. A big thanks to Project Aces for making the big brother a monthly drop instead of tournament.
Possibly after getting the little bro to lv.15, I'll have no more regrets with the game, maybe enjoy a 3 sortie per day instead of 6 or just log-in to grab those sign-in bonus to build up my credits to slowly upgrade the big brother. I'm an ace combat fan for the last 20 years can't stop that desire to fly heh. Of course, I'm still waiting for xbox one to announce if they'll include ac6 to their back compatibility list or not but I'm starting to save up for a 360 just in case.
To be honest, the attitude of most players really changed how I felt with the game: in most matches, I see people fly the same planes that could net them a lot of points, I really can't blame them with the limited sortie we could do without spending on fuel and the over-the-top prices of upgrades.
But there are times when I get to fly with decent japanese players and some players I met in other bbs that only fly their favorite planes just like me and really has the skill that never cease to amaze me.
im in much the same boat, the trees near done, my falkens lev 12, i know the best way to complete each area, i have 90 fuel stocked and even have a r101 to show off in.
however, its been in the last few months that i have found myself most keen on playing. daliy.
hell i have put off buying a ps4 because i only have time for one game a day, and this ones it.
i think the are a mixture of reasons for this, primarly i am enjoying the game more.
i have now reached the stage where its hard to get stressed out over my performance, unlike when i was starting out, i now have a fav playstyle useing my fav fighter at a level where its hard to get less than 40k a match. and if do i mess up its not because im at any disadvantige in aircraft, i was just out played by a better team.
secondly, dispite clames stateing otherwise, the is still new content out every month the content's of which i often find i was not expecting and that i can get ahold of without spending real moneys on.
so in the end im still enjoying infinty, and thats what counts.
My tree progress is nearly done, I just need to get some of the "combo parts". I'll see when they repeat the Demon Lord TDM event to see if I can get to earn the -Cipher- this time. Meanwhile I'm still upgrading the -Patriot- Eagle in one of my accounts. Regardless, I still enjoy the game (but I think there's still room for improvement), and there's plenty of aircraft I have that I'd like to upgrade, so I doubt I'll ever be "done" with it
I'll probably stick with infinity untill its end, mainly because I'm also a AC veteran since 96' and never stopped loving the series. I still got a quarter of the tree left to unlock and I still enjoy the heck out of this game. I've come to the point in which I can actually compete in tournaments for the top prizes without spending a buttload of money into the game and this basically is a motivation to gain some cool vintage prizes.
I'm on the same way as you, I already have all my beloved aircraft, the Gripen, the Su-35, the T-50, the F-15E, F-16F, and I've got every single top 3000 plane, and all of them are level 8 or higher, which are the F-15S/MTD -Stripes-, Su-34 -Capricorn-, ASF-X -Happy New Year, Su-37 -JL- and in the future the Typhoon -Omega-. Also I got a couple of top 1000 emblems that I truly love, which are the Galm and Antares emblems.
On the other side, I'm not stocking fuel anymore, I'm just playing as long as I have fun, somedays I only play once a day, some days I play 6 sorties or even 20 if I feel like playing a lot. I'm just stocking credits to wait for the standard version of the CFA-44 Nosferatu to come up, buy it, and upgrade it at least to level 5, yea, even if its cost is ridiculously high, I've been waiting for this plane for more than a year to just give up. After that, I'm pretty much done. I won't say I will stop playing because I'll probably play Infinity until it's dead, but after that I'll definitely not play as often as now.
After getting the F-4G to level 15 before the end of 2014, everything else is just a bonus for me nowadays.
Top 2000 or even top 1000 is not a realistic goal for me in most cases, especially since I don't buy fuels. Maxing out something means little when development team can raise the cap at any time. Furthermore, an F2P model means completing something is unfeasible unless a lot of resources and effort are put into it.
I thought about bringing the F-4G to level 20 before, but this means locking up research progress for anything else for the next few months or so. We'll see.
I don't care lol. All my 725-750 cst fighters are gonna be done at level 11. Unless Hard maps become significantly more rewarding. I already am done with the vanilla F-22A and the -TG-, so I'm dedicating my credits to other aircraft like the F-15C variants and saving up whatever SP Aircraft Lvl Cap form comes at my hands for these. Oddly enough I don't find any special attacker or multirole worthy of spending more of those forms onto it.
When will I "done" with it? When the servers will be shut down. I just love this game, I have no goals, just wanna play it with my friends and other AC fans :) . Until then, I try to upgrade my favourite planes (F-16C, F-117, F/A-18, EA-18G) as high as I can :) .
I will be done when I get bored with grinding slowly and randomly through the Aircraft Tree. I've recently taken up playing Skyrim so ACI has taken the backburner. I liked previous titles for the Campaign missions, and the lack of an endearing, running campaign is dissapointing.
It's not all about to win, though, it is just playing for fun, I don't see the fun in playing in Moscow with an MTD and get a ridiculous high score over and over, even when I like to compete with other players, it's just about enjoy what you do.
This next torunament is probably my last. Most fuel I've ever had stocked up, and will be the most time nto allocated for work I've had since the game launched. But, still won't say I'm done with the game after that. I'll probably still sortie, collect whaveter little things they offr along the way in terms of challenges, and mostly fly for the fun of it. But, outside of that, it seems Inifinity will stretch beyond my sight.
I didn't think about that til see this topic, but i think i'm done already, almost a month since the last time i've played; I hope that in the next game they release is a full game (focused in campaign)
Or at least they release another game like infinity in PS4 or PC but with some kind of chronological advance in aircrafts. this way we could really enjoy "cold war planes" and after a time move to nextgen fighters progressively...
Simple: when I reach rank Colonel, I have all trophies & that basically marks the end of buying stocked fuel, thus only playing it some times for fun using supplied fuel, but really ending not just yet. :D
Only if I get to Brigadier General, upgrade my favorite planes of each category completely,I get one of the beat planes on a tournament ( have been saving up a lot of fuel for one I want ) and the owners of the Brazilian Ace Combat page stop playing.Otherwise,I'm playing it until it ends or if I end up getting bored with it.
I think I'm 95% done with Infinity. Went on vacation for a few days and just very little desire to play once I got back. I just can't purchase anymore fuel and I'll most likely play the campaign storyline if it continues, but I wasn't enthralled with it like I was with the other games. I'll pop on here and there to fly around, but no more grinding.
I'm not sure if I'll ever be done with Infinity. Perhaps only when the server is shut down, because I really like it, and I have my own goals to achieve (upgrading some aircrafts to a certain point). But at the current pace, it's going to take like forever. For example, my best one is a lv.9 F-15S/MTD. But I aim to have it at lv.15. A really long way ahead. Still, I'm enjoying the game in the meanwhile. And I think that's what matters the most.
Ok, first and foremost i gotta tell y'all that i retired once (but not permanently) from the game, at the time there was too low stuff and no high-end superplanes like the ADF-01, ADFX-02, XFA-27, GAF-1, X-02 and such. But what really hitted me back in time was the lack of the Sukhoi Su-37 Terminator, that plane (felt like it) was my signature plane since Ace Combat 4, the first AC i ever played, and hooked me on the series. Always liked that plane, and ain't gonna let it go for NO OTHER PLANE (except another Su-37, like Yellow 13 XD). So, after nearly a year away, i felt it was time to come back to the skies. Came back and i saw the tree expanded, and i finally saw it up there, on the topmost of the tree, the Su-37.
So, since then, i kept flying, and by not being an wallet warrior nor spending a single penny on the game, i keep hoarding the max gas as i can so at the time we get an another 6x-fuel-spending, i go all-out (as i did for the F-15 S/MTD Leo, had around 45 gas + 3 contracts of each) to finish upgrade my Su-37 to lv.15. Then, i'll max out an attacker, possibly the so-forgotten Su-25TM Frogfoot. Or maybe the multirole F-15 S/MTD Leo, just to fill in the performance table at it's page. After one of these, i'll go for the other. Then, for the Virgo plane, as it's my sign. Then, i dunno, fill completely the tech tree doesn't seems well worth it, although the best parts awaits at the end... well, probably after i level up these planes, i'll go for their SP.W. Then, probably i'll stop, as 1- I prefer a singleplayer games OVER multiplayer ones; 2- I'm saddened to know that this game has only 8 campaign missions. It could be the usual min. 18 missions, like AC4 and AC:Z (in a single run, that is) (AC:AH doesn't count); 3- The MR system is a bit faulty, as I feel it doesn't correctly measuresa player's skill, heck i've seen a (relatively) low-MR player (around 1620 MR) single-handedly achieved 100K points on the match (also he had an ~2200 cst. plane!) That couldn't be an average player i usually face with in co-ops! Also, i grow tired of these tournaments with prizes for 1000th (originally it was 200th) first ranks to get: emblems, planes and nicknames, and only the wallet warriors gains such stuff! Why not give a chance to us free player, so that we may even think in the future to contribute to the game? Nonononono, first let's reap our cash we sowed on the wallet warriors, and let US be sucked down with only wishes and dreams of such planes, emblems and nicks!!!
For now, tolerance still exists, although it corrodes every day. Also, i hope i can finish those planes so i can get the hell outta this game, and before Bandai Namco decides to cancel the support for this game, and then... all i can do from this point onwards is to imaginate.
