The X-02 Wyvern, alternative designation YF-25A Wyvern is an experimental fighter manufactured by the Erusian Air and Space Administration (EASA). First conceptualized in 1987, the X-02 Wyvern combines a stealthy & futuristic design with state-of-the-art aviation technology, making it one of the best aircraft available on the market.

The X-02 Wyvern is one of the most famous original aircraft designs in the Ace Combat series, appearing as a secret aircraft in nearly all games post-Ace Combat 04, the only notable exceptions being Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation and Ace Combat: Assault Horizon. A common characteristic shared by all iterations of the Wyvern are high flight maneuverability, above-average speed and high air-to-air combat capabilities, but light armor. It is the first original design featured in the PlayStation 2 game series, as well as one of the most common of the series, alongside the ADF-01 FALKEN.

In the decade of the 1980s, a request was issued to create a new fighter aircraft to complement the arsenal of the Federal Erusian Navy, and potentially that of the air force, the FEAF. After the request was approved, development was undertaken jointly by a number of national military manufacturing firms, all led by the EASA.

By February 1987, the preliminary design blueprints had already been completed, however unspecified problems arised which caused the delay of the aircraft's production.

The development of the X-02 resumed in 1998, when the first flight of the aircraft was held by EASA. It was likely to have resumed during the Usean Rebellion, however it is not known whether Erusea's involvement in the conflict or the war itself affected the production process.

During the end of the decade, the existence of the Wyvern was already known by the neighboring nations of Erusea. Their ambitious plan prompted them to begin the development of their own indigenous aircraft, however no such aircraft were ever revealed to the world in the following years.

Usean Continental War period (2003/2005)

In August 2003, Erusea invaded the neutral nation of San Salvacion and seized the Stonehenge Turret Network, the railgun arrangement intended to protect Usea from the Ulysses 1994XF04 asteroid. The Erusean government intended to order the production of several Wyverns for the defense of STN, however numerous parties argued that more traditional aircraft should be used in lieu of more costly "next-gen" models, such as the X-02. This argument sparked a controversy and internal conflicts within the Erusean parliament, which led the production of the Wyvern to a near absolute halt.

By mid-2005, the country's worsening military situation and several major losses, such as those of Stonehenge and the Aegir Fleet prompted them to hastily restart the production of the X-02. Over the next months, several live fire missile tests were held with several aircraft by the EASA.

In September, the Independent State Allied Forces launched a siege on the Erusean capital of Farbanti, which ended with the fall of the country's military infrastructure and the death of the army's supreme commander. After the end of Operation Autumn Thunder, as it was known within the ISAF, a number of finished Wyvern airframes were found by the Allied forces, and were subsequently confiscated.

After the war, the X-02 underwent several field performance tests. In these circumstances, it was discovered that the fighter was superior to even the ISAF's mainstay F-22A Raptor.

Free Erusea insurgency

A year after the end of the Usean Continental War, in 2006 a remnant of Erusean troops, "Free Erusea" engaged in an armed uprising across Usea. At the end of the insurgency, ISAF ace Mobius One invaded the faction's headquarters, who deployed a small squadron of seized X-02 aircraft as a last resort. However, Mobius overcame their technological superiority and defeated all the Wyverns in combat, an event which would mark the end of Free Erusea's rebellion.

Some time after the war, Erusea secured a deal to export the X-02 Wyvern and its design blueprints to the Union of Yuktobanian Republics in Verusa. The military firm North Osea Gründer Industries was hired to produce a licence-built version of the EASA aircraft, which was known as the "X-02A".

In 2010, a lone X-02 belonging to the Yuktobanian Air Force entered Osean Federation airspace, and was destroyed. The Osean military salvaged the wreckage of the Wyvern and shipped it to Sand Island Air Base, where it would be hidden from the public to avoid political repercussions.

In the year 2011, an airshow was held at November City. The highlight of the event was a joint formation between an X-02 Wyvern, a second-generation Gründer ADF-01 FALKEN and its prototype, the ADFX-01 Morgan.

The X-02 Wyvern is an experimental fighter with an striking appearance. The aircraft incorporates an uncommon design with variable geometry technology with a forward-swept wing (FSW) configuration.

As the aircraft gains speed, the wings and vertical stabilizers fold inward to reduce air drag, and retract to their neutral position once it slows down. This unconventional design grants it a degree of mobility rivaled only by aircraft such as the North Osea I.G. ADF-01 FALKEN, however this advantage comes at the cost of light armor plating.

The X-02 is powered by two tri-dimensional thrust vectoring ERG-1000 engines, which provide the aircraft with the ability of Mach 2.5 flight and a maximum speed of 1,050km/h.

The X-02's central armaments are a machine gun of unknown design and AIM-9X Sidewinder missiles, which are omitted in favor of the R-73 Archer in the Gründer version.

Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies

"A Stealth aircraft built with the latest technology. Boasts total air-to-air and air-to-ground capability."
― Hangar description.

The Wyvern's first appearance, it is the resident "superfighter" of Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies. It is unlocked upon finishing all missions in the game with an S rank in Normal difficulty, and costs $1,414,000 to purchase.

It is a Multirole-type fighter aircraft with all-round high statistics. It has high speed, high mobility and relatively weak armor, comparable to that of the F-4E Phantom II. It is a very efficient aircraft in all aspects of combat, having high air-to-air and air-to-ground capabilities. It is armed with a machine gun with 950 bullets and 82 missiles, while its secondary weapons are the Bomblet Dispenser, XLAA and QAAM, allowing it to engage both air and groundborne threats efficiently.

There are two special paint schemes available for the X-02. The first one is unlocked by S-ranking all missions in Hard mode on a 2nd playthrough, while the third and final paint scheme is unlocked by repeating the method above, but in Expert difficulty. Both X-02 variants are worth $1,414,000 and $1,838,000 credits, respectively.

Paint schemes

  • Standard: Normal gray.
  • Color 2: All-black paint.
  • Special: White with EASA tailfin markings.

Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War

In the main campaign of Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War, the X-02 Wyvern is a very uncommon aircraft. It is featured solely in the ending cutscene of the mission "Journey Home", in which Albert Genette and Wolfgang Buchner speak in a hangar over the remains of a downed Gründer-made export unit in Sand Island Air Base.

The X-02 Wyvern can be unlocked by purchasing at least one unit of every aircraft in the game with the exception of the ADF-01 FALKEN.

Arcade mode

The X-02 marks its return in Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War. This iteration is unlocked by buying & obtaining at least one of every aircraft in the game, excluding the ADF-01 Falken, then finishing a single mission, afterwards the X-02 will be available for purchase at $39,700 credits an airframe. In The Unsung War, the Wyvern is virtually identical to its original incarnation, except for the obvious limitation of a single SP weapon.

Ace Combat 5 features the first in-game canonical appearance of the X-02 Wyvern: in the cutscene after mission #17, Journey Home, when Albert Genette & Pops are speaking about Grunder Industries, their focus changes into the wrecked airframe inside the hangar, which can be barely identified as that of an X-02 when the camera pans behind its back. The same moment is featured in the Japan-only The Unsung War artbook with the only difference that the camera is further back in the hangar, clearly showing the airplane's engines, which only confirms that this wreckage belongs to a Wyvern.

Two paint schemes are unlockable for the Wyvern: the first one is the standard "Ghosts of Razgriz" paint scheme, which is unlocked for the X-02 and most aircraft after mission #20, Ancient Walls . The 3rd and final scheme (described below) is unlocked by S-ranking all missions in hard mode. The X-02's AC5 incarnation is infamous for a particular glitch: if the player S-ranks all missions in Hard with the X-02 unlocked then buys the plane afterwards, the 3rd paint scheme will be rendered unattainable. There is no solution to this glitch as it affects the player's save file, thus the player will be forced to delete their save and start the game anew.

Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War

"The pinnacle of Erusian military aviation technology, the 'Wyvern' combines stealth with extraordinary agility, made possible by its unique variable geometry wings."
― Official ZERO description

In Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War, the X-02 Wyvern is a secret aircraft. It can be unlocked after completing the main Campaign mode twice in any difficulty with a differing Ace Style in both playthroughs. Alternatively, it may be unlocked by having an Ace Combat 04 save file, in which case it will be unlocked for purchase after completing mission #01, "Glacial Skies". In both circumstances, it costs $215,000 credits to purchase.

As far as performance goes, it is very similar to its appearance in The Unsung War. It is a Fighter aircraft with a strong focus on offense, maneuverability and speed. It is the most mobile aircraft in the game, having a Mobility rating matched only by the ADF-01 FALKEN and the ADFX-01 Morgan, the latter's prototype. Air-to-Air, Speed and Stability are similarly high, with the lowest parameters being Defense and Air-to-Ground.

The Wyvern retains the same weaponry from 5, having 84 standard missiles and an XLAA with 14 missiles as its first SP weapon. The other compatible weapons are the QAAM and Advanced Air-to-Ground Missiles (XAGM), which reinforces its air-to-ground capabilities.

The X-02 has five paint schemes in The Belkan War.

  • Standard: Light blue/gray camouflage pattern.
  • Mercenary: Gray/black camouflage.
  • Soldier: Light with blue tail trim.
  • Knight: Ghost white with blue frontal stabilizer and wing trim.
  • Special: Grey digital camouflage with blue frontal edges and white stabilizer tips.

Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception

  • The name "Wyvern" refers to a flying serpent that is often depicted in family crests and national coats of arms in many European countries. It is often characterized as having a pair of bird-like legs, one pair of wings, and a barbed tail.
  • Elements from the F-22A Raptor, YF-23A Black Widow II, F-15E Strike Eagle, F-16C Fighting Falcon, Su-37 Terminator, and Su-47 Berkut are notable on the X-02.
  • Model company Hasegawa made a limited edition plastic model kit of the X-02.
  • It's real world counterpart can be best seen as the Northrop Switchblade, an aircraft that that was patented by the company in 1990. The film Stealth also has a variant of the X-02, known as the F/A-37 Talon.
